Understanding Arrays in Excel

An array in Excel is a collection of values or a range of cells that are grouped together.


Arrays enable users to perform calculations on multiple data points simultaneously, making it a valuable tool for tasks ranging from simple calculations to complex data analysis.


There are two primary types of arrays in Excel: single-cell arrays and multi-cell arrays.


1. Single-cell arrays


A single-cell array consists of a single formula that calculates a result based on multiple values. By using functions such as SUM, AVERAGE, MAX, or MIN, you can easily perform calculations across a range of cells without the need for a separate formula for each cell.


For example, to calculate the sum of a range of numbers in cells A1 to A5, you can use the following single-cell array formula:

=SUM(A1:A5)



2. Multi-cell arrays:


Multi-cell arrays, also known as array formulas, allow users to perform complex calculations and operations on multiple cells simultaneously. These formulas are enclosed in curly braces `{}` and are entered by pressing Ctrl + Shift + Enter instead of just Enter.


For instance, suppose you have two columns of numbers in A1:A5 and B1:B5, and you want to calculate the sum of their products. The array formula would look like this:

{=SUM(A1:A5*B1:B5)}



Remember to use Ctrl + Shift + Enter to input and execute array formulas correctly.
