Effective Tips When Working with Children With Special Education Needs

teachChildren who have special education needs usually have some form of learning difficulty or disability. This may be something they overcome as they get older, or it may be something they need help with throughout their schooling lives. Basically these children find it harder to learn that their peers, which means that they require special attention, care and assistance when it comes to their schooling each and every day.  

Interaction

There are a number of things you can make use of when working with children who have special education needs. The first step to working with any child with special education needs is to encourage interaction. Whether you are teaching a new class or you are taking on a new student, interacting with them and encouraging their interaction is the best place to start.  

Observe

The observation process is a chance for you to see how the child interacts with their class mates and how they manage the tasks you have given them. This is your opportunity to identify what the child needs and how you can help them moving forward. The children are going to vary considerably and may range from those with slight learning difficulties to children with autism and more. Each child is unique and it's your responsibilities to identify what they need to make their education experience enjoyable and to help them achieve the best they can in a learning environment.  

Common Sense

A lot of what you do with the children and how you teach them is down to basic common sense. You will have completed your training and you will be in an education setting. It is now down to you to ensure you get the best of out each and every child. Focus on each child individually to identify what they need and then work with each of the children, giving them the support they need on a daily basis.  

Be Flexible

One of the things you will learn very quickly when working with children with special education needs is that you need to be flexible in your teaching approach and in your daily timetable. You cannot be specific about how things will be done and what is going to happen next. Flexibility will ensure that the children have the best experience, but also you get to enjoy the experience as well, enjoying your career and the difference you are making to these children each and every day.  

Consistency

With some of the children you may find they are uncomfortable to start. They may struggle with certain tasks and consistency and following the same programme will help them become comfortable with the experience and improve moving forward. Focus on being consistent in everything you do with the children, helping them to relax and become more comfortable. Be consistent in the tasks you give them, the way you teach and the way you handle the children on a daily basis.  

Patience

One of the personality traits you are going to have to have when it comes to working with children with special education needs is patience. You may find that you feel frustrated from time to time, which is completely understandable. You need to bear in mind that some of these children are gong to be very trying from time to time, but being flexible and yet ensuring consistency in certain things will help the children relax and focus and will enable you to feel more relaxed. Remember every child is going to learn at a different pace, so take the time to focus on each individual child to ensure that they get the support and assistance they need. Some children will catch on relatively quickly, while others may take some encouragement, help and support to get there.  

Make Use of Verbal and Auditory Senses

Children with special education needs will respond better to certain senses. You may find that one of the children you are working with, especially if they struggle with language will benefit from auditory cues, while other children will benefit greatly with verbal cues. Either way, you need to ensure you communicate constantly with the children to ensure that they hear you and start listening and following instruction. This can be something as simple as cleaning up the classroom before the end of the school day.  

Always Remain Positive

It's not uncommon to start feeling negative when you have chosen a challenging career where you work with special education needs children each day. This can certainly take it's toll on you mentally over time. It is imperative that in order to make an impact and get the most out of each child, you remain positive. A positive attitude can go a long way. Positivity and you can feel more motivated and as you see the difference you are making and you see the children taking steps towards betterment, you can feel that positivity grow.  

Have a Plan

Having a set plan and sticking to it can work best for you and the children. Whether you are working on a reading syllabus or you want to work on getting the children to interact more and understand instruction, working to a set plan can make a significant difference. With a plan in place, you are able to be more consistent. Though remember that you should not put a set time frame to your plan, as you will need to be flexible in your approach to achieve results moving forward.  

Conclusion

Teaching special education needs children is not for everyone and the degree of difficulty of disability can vary considerably between the children with one child struggling slightly to children that cannot communicate effectively. You will need to be passionate about what you do and have the patience, determination and flexible approach needed to work with each of these children to help them reach their full potential moving forward.
