On the other hand, hospitality management includes a wide spectrum of industries like food and beverage, accommodation, travel and events management. Online hospitality courses also include theories from similar but related disciplines such as business, commercial and supply chain management.

Hospitality Management Career: Daily Activities and Hours of Work
If you’re working as a hotel manager, for example, you will need to perform certain daily duties such as overseeing different departments like housekeeping, laundry, room service, concierge desk, spa and conference facilities. You’ll need to keep an eye on the overall picture while paying attention to detail at the same time. For instance, you will need to ensure that the front desk doesn’t check a guest into a room where the housekeeping staff are still working.
The duties that fall to a hospitality manager differ according to the setting. Generally, these could include the following:
- Recruiting, interviewing and training staff
- Managing finances and budgeting
- Overseeing daily operations
- Planning and scheduling activities
- Addressing guest complaints, grievances and queries
- Optimising business performance
Hospitality management courses are closely related to business management in that they provide useful knowledge regarding leadership, delegation, communication and business development. However, hospitality courses are specially tailored to include skills relevant to the hospitality sector. In addition, hospitality courses are ideal for those interested in becoming entrepreneurs in this field.
The hours of work may not follow a traditional 9 to 5 model and you may need to work night shifts. As you rise in seniority, you may also be required to be on call during emergencies or during busy seasons such as Christmas and New Year. Average salary levels usually range anywhere from £25,000 to £50,000, or even higher, depending on the location and settings. Upscale hotels situated in the city, for example, would pay more than a bed-and-breakfast located in the countryside.
